The Black Horse Inn - Warrenton Virginia

The Haunted Black Horse Inn

The History

The Black Horse Inn is named after the Black Horse Cavalry which was conceived at a gathering of Warrenton lawyers in 1858, one of the local companies called to active duty by Governor Henry Wise in 1859. The Black Horse Cavalry led a successful charge against Union forces at the First Battle of Manassas winning the special praise of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Known as Company "H" of the 4th Virginia Cavalry, this unit served as bodyguard, escort and scout for General Stonewall Jackson and Joseph E. Johnston. Following the war, a number of the men of the Black Horse became prominent leaders in the Commonwealth.

The original part of the mansion was originally built in the 1850's and the additions were added in the early 1900's.

The Haunting

At this mid-1700s inn building, said to have been used as a rest stop by George Washington and his men en route to Valley Forge, folks say the spirit set is hopping. Sudden cold temperatures, footsteps, and unexplained voices abound, and photographs taken of the inside have picked up orbs, a male apparition, and another ghost of a young girl.

Black Horse Inn in Warrenton, VA boasts not one, but FOUR ghosts on the premises, and with its history as a Civil War hospital, one can see how it could be haunted by the past. The first ghost is a woman believed to have been a Civil War nurse in the hospital, and she has been known to laugh in the ears of gentlemen, perhaps trying to comfort them as she did her patients. The second ghost leaves an impression on the bed in the Burgundy Room every once in a while. The third, the “Ghost of Christmas,” knocked over the Christmas tree three years in a row, breaking all of the ornaments every time. And finally, the fourth ghost is called “the Dancer,” because of the lively tapping heard at night at the top of the staircase.
