The Bourbon Orleans Hotel - New Orleans Louisiana

The Haunted Bourbon Orleans Hotel

The History

The Bourbon Orleans Hotel is a beautiful luxury hotel . . .it is enriched with history. The Orleans Ballroom was built in 1817 and acted as a theater an ballroom and later, a state and house legislative meeting place.  In 1881, the Orleans Theater and Ballroom had been acquired by the Sisters of the Holy Family for use as an orphanage, medical ward, school and convent. For 83 years the Sisters remained there until they needed to expand. During this time the convent was here, Yellow Fever epidemics in the city were rampant. Ghost children have been heard in the hallways, lightly stepping about. A little girl with her ball is seen once in a while.

The Haunting

The Bourbon Orleans is said to be one of the most haunted hotels in New Orleans.  There are more than three ghosts that haunt the building -  A Civil War Soldier on the sixth floor, a nun in room 644, a little girl who chases a ball down the sixth floor hallway and a woman who once visited the ballroom.

In the past, the hotel was the Convent of the Holy Family and after 1960, the convent was transformed into the hotel. The infamous second floor ballroom hosted many of New Orleans’ most prestigious events.  Now the ballroom is said to have a lone dancer who sways under the crystal chandelier.  Spend time in great lobby and you might see an elderly ghost who reads the newspaper while smoking a cigar.  It’s reported that sometimes guests smell the cigar before they see the apparition.

Stories of the rooms and corridors of the Bourbon Orleans Hotel being haunted are about as old as the hotel itself. Prior to the hotel's existence, the site was home to the historic Orleans Ballroom and Theater before being converted into a convent in the late 1800s. Ghosts who roam the halls and rooms of the Bourbon Orleans today lived during many different eras of this building's history.  The Bourbon Orleans Hotel ranks as one of New Orleans' top haunted hotels. Chip Coffey, internationally acclaimed pyschic and host of A&E's Psychic Kids, performed a reading at the historic Orleans ballroom as part of his Coffey Talk Tour and detected and communicated with several spirits, including a little boy and girl who
experienced sudden deaths.
